Fireflies seeks written and visual art submissions that explore one or several films by ONE of the upcoming issue’s featured directors. The tone and format should be open to all readers. Our contributors range from cinephiles and academics to writers and artists encountering these films for the first time.

We print responses to cinema that are personal, daring and that wouldn’t necessarily be found in other film journals: short fiction, visual art, poetry, memoir, comics, and creative non-fiction that experiments with multiple forms. We are also interested in translations of film criticism which has yet to find an English-language readership.

Our contributors feed off the films’ moods and ideas, using them to take off into new, uncharted territories – selected pieces will illuminate the film(s) under discussion and motivate readers to seek them out, whether for the first or umpteenth time. All submissions must be original and previously unpublished in English.

Please note: for non-fiction submissions and translations, we recommend sending a detailed and well-researched pitch (up to 500 words) with examples of previous writing. If your pitch is accepted, a later deadline will be set for a first draft.

All submissions must be emailed to by Sunday 28 May, 2017,  accompanied by a submission cover sheet, which also contains detailed specs for written and visual art contributions.
